RAW ALPACA FLEECE

£3 per 100g for 'blanket' suitable for spinning

£2 per 100g for 'seconds' suitable for wet felting and needle felting

Raw alpaca fleece* suitable for spinning, needle felting and wet felting.

After shearing the fleece is skirted to obtain the most uniform batch of fibre, hopefully removing dry matter, second cuts  and guard hairs. Second cuts are where the shearer has gone over the same place twice making small lumps of fleece. Guard hairs are the long straight fibres which can cause the itching when worn.

The blanket is the best of the fleece from shearing and is generally used for spinning. The finer the micron the better and finer the fleece.

Seconds  (not second cuts) are the fleece from the neck, legs and belly suitable for wet felting and needle felting.

Alpaca fleece can be spun from raw as alpaca does not contain any Lanolin so not greasy (all natural colours), it should only need carding (brushing) through to remove vegetable matter and align the fibres to make it easier to spin.

Please contact us for further details including what colours and quantities are available as raw fleece is seasonal. We usually shear at the end of May so the majority of colours will be available at that time.

*Raw is when the fleece is straight from the alpaca, it hasn't been washed or carded.
